As parents, establishing the solid and realistic rules we want our children to follow can be quite challenging. The Contract will help you clarify your rules and develop a plan for following through with your expectations. Most parents recognize that we make mistakes when we are upset and displeased with our children's behavior. However, we know how our children are going to behave before the problem ever arises. Thus, the contract will help you plan for those most common problems before they ever occur, and help you avoid making one of those common parenting mistakes.
The contract will take you through the following 5 steps, and when you are finished, you just "Point and Click" and your printer will produce a contract personalized for your child.
- Step One: Identify the most problematic behaviors
- Step Two: Identify the items or conditions that will motivate your child to meet your expectations
- Step Three: Review and select the 3-5 most problematic behaviors, that are now written as Rules, that you choose to enforce in your home
- Step Four: Pair a specific consequence (from items identified in Step Two) that will be issued if your child fails to meet one of your rules
- Step
Five: Review your final contract - if approved, print it out for you
and your child to use as a reminder of the rules and consequences you
now expect
The wake up call - Look in the mirror!
Think
of the most problematic behavior you see in your child; you know, the
one that bugs you the most. Have you got it in your mind? Now, here is
the wake up call! Whatever you are now holding in your mind represents
the area that you are doing the poorest job of as a parent. It wouldn't
be "number one" if you were doing a great job handling it! That means
you need to rethink how you are managing the particular behavior. The
Contract can help!!!
